Moving a domain to a new registrar — for better prices, support or to consolidate everything in one place — is straightforward once you know the steps. Here is the whole process.
Before you start
A domain usually must be at least 60 days old at its current registrar (and 60 days since any previous transfer). Check that first.
1. Unlock the domain
Log in to your current registrar and turn off the registrar lock (sometimes called "transfer lock").
2. Get the authorization code
Request the EPP / auth code (also called a transfer key). It is like a password that authorises the move.
3. Disable WHOIS privacy temporarily (if needed)
Some transfers require privacy to be off briefly so the new registrar can verify ownership. You can re-enable it after.
4. Start the transfer at the new registrar
Enter your domain and the auth code at the new registrar and pay the transfer fee — which usually adds a year to your registration.
5. Approve and wait
You will get an email to confirm the transfer. Approve it, and the move typically completes within a few days.
Keep your site and email running
- Transfers do not change your DNS — your site and email keep working throughout.
- Do not let the domain expire mid-transfer.
- Re-enable WHOIS privacy and the registrar lock once it is done.
Transferring to Nexgenz is free to start and we guide you through every step — plus you keep the time left on your registration.
