Website Security 101: How to Protect Your Site from Hackers — Nexgenz Technologies

Most websites are not hacked by criminal masterminds — they are hacked by bots scanning for known, fixable weaknesses. The good news: a handful of sensible habits block the vast majority of attacks. Here is your practical checklist.

1. Keep everything updated

Outdated software is the number-one way sites get compromised. Update your CMS, plugins, themes and server software promptly — or use a host/maintenance plan that does it for you.

2. Use strong, unique passwords and 2FA

Weak and reused passwords are an open door. Use a password manager, and turn on two-factor authentication on your hosting, CMS and email.

3. Install SSL (HTTPS)

SSL encrypts data between your site and visitors. It is free with good hosts, protects logins and forms, and Google favours HTTPS sites.

4. Back up regularly — and test restores

If the worst happens, a recent backup is the difference between a quick recovery and a disaster. Automate daily backups and occasionally test that a restore actually works.

5. Add a web application firewall (WAF)

A WAF filters malicious traffic before it reaches your site, blocking common attacks like SQL injection and brute-force login attempts.

6. Limit access and remove what you do not use

Give people the least access they need, remove unused plugins and accounts, and change default admin usernames. Every extra plugin or login is another door.

If your site is hacked — act fast

  • Take it offline or into maintenance mode to stop the spread.
  • Restore from a clean backup and change all passwords.
  • Find how they got in and patch it — or get a professional cleanup so it does not recur.

When to call in help

If you handle customer data, run a store, or have already been compromised, a professional security audit and hardening is worth it. Nexgenz runs vulnerability assessments and penetration tests, cleans infected sites, and locks them down with a firewall and a clear remediation plan.
